Microsoft Windows NT, Beta March 1993
Patch for IBM XGA and XGA II Video Problems
The Microsoft Windows NT product group has recently identified a video problem
with the March Beta release of Windows NT. If you have installed the Beta
March release you may encounter problems running IBM XGA systems in the XGA
high resolution modes. The XGA driver executes only in VGA mode regardless
which resolution is selected.
If you encounter this problem, please take the following steps to remedy this
behavior. We appreciate your efforts in reporting problem areas and encourage
you to continue working with us to improve the product. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may have caused.
__________________________________________________________________________
Instructions to resolve the problem behavior:
1. Logon to Windows NT as Administrator or with administrative privileges.
2. Execute the MS-DOS Command Prompt from the Program Manager.
3. Locate NTDETECT.COM on the system boot drive, normally C:\, and change
the attributes of this file at the command line by typing,
ATTRIB NTDETECT.COM -H -S -R.
4. Insert the floppy patch disk into the floppy disk drive and at the
command line type, COPY A:\NTDETECT.COM C:\.
5. Change the attributes of NTDETECT.COM again by typing,
ATTRIB NTDETECT.COM +H +R +S.
6. Locate XGA.SYS on the system hard drive in the Windows NT system
drivers path. For example, CD \WIN31\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS or change directories
to the appropriate system drivers directory for your Windows NT installation
where XGA.SYS is located.
7. With the floppy patch disk in the floppy disk drive, copy the updated
file to replacing the failing one. For example, type
COPY A:XGA.SYS C:\WIN31\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS.
8. Exit Program Manager and shutdown from Windows NT by pressing
CTRL-ALT-DEL, and select Shutdown, then OK. You may now log back on and
proceed as normal.
9. If you wish to change the video resolution for your system, execute
Windows NT Setup from the Main program Group. Select Options, Change System
Settings.
